There was a farmer who grew excellent quality corn.

Every year he won the award for the best grown corn.

One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. 

The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. 

“How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked. 

 

“Why sir,” said the farmer, “Didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. 

If my neighbours grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours grow good corn.”

So it is with our lives...

I had spent an hour in the bank with my Uncle, as he had to transfer some money.  I couldn't resist myself & asked...

''Uncle, why don't we activate your internet banking?''

''Why would I do that?'' 
He asked...

''Well, then you wont have to spend an hour here for things like transfer.

You can even do your shopping online. Everything will be so easy!''

I was so excited about initiating him into the world of Net banking.

He asked ''If I do that, I wont have to step out of the house?

''Yes, yes''! I said. I told him how even grocery can be delivered at door now and how amazon delivers everything!

His answer left me tongue-tied.

He said ''Since I entered this bank today, I have met four of my friends, I have chatted a while with the staff who know me very well by now.

You know I m alone...
this is the company that I need. I like to get ready and come to the bank. I have enough time, it is the physical touch that I crave.

Two years back I got sick, The store owner  from whom I buy fruits, came to see me and sat by my bedside and cried.

My wife fell down few days back while on her morning walk. My local grocer saw her and immediately got his car to rush her home as he knows where I live.

Would I have that 'human' touch if everything became online?

Why would I want everything delivered to me and force me to interact with just my computer? 

I like to know the person that I'm dealing with and not just the 'seller' . It creates bonds. Relationships.

Is there something called "Root Cause Analysis" ??

A Management lecturer was talking about "Quality".

Lecturer : We all know Lord Ram went to spend 14 years in forest and Sita was kidnapped because of a "quality issue".

Student : How is this anything to do with quality?

Lecturer : Tell me why did Sita go to forest with Ram ?

Student : Because she was his wife and respected his every decision.

Lecturer : OK but why did Ram go to forest ?

Student : Because his father Dasharatha told him to do so and he never disobeyed his father.

Lecturer : OK why did Dasharatha send his son to forest ?

Student : Dasharatha offered his wife (Kaikeyi) two boons , and she chose to make use of them in the future.

And she wanted her son to be king, so on the day of Rama's crowning,

she asked Dasharatha to send Rama to forest and crown her son; reminding him of his promised boons.

Lecturer : So why did Dasharatha offer his wife two boons ?

Student : Because during a military campaign against Sambarasura, the wheel of  Dasharatha's chariot broke and Sambarasura's arrow pierced the King's armor.

She nursed the wounded King back to health.

Touched by her courage and timely service, Dasharatha offered her two boons.

Lecturer: Hence Proved. The quality of Chariot's wheel was not up to the mark .. leading to kidnapping of Sita...!!!!

[So, the Quality is very important and if the quality of Chariot's wheel was good, the Ramayana wouldn't have happened!]

After a long journey, Sri Ramchandra and the army of monkeys, reached the southern coast of our vast land and beheld the expanse of water separating them from Sri Lanka. The search for Sita was over; Rama now knew where she was; it only remained to redeem her from Ravana, by peaceful persuasion if possible or by war, if necessary. In line with our tradition of seeking Divine help, before commencing any work, Sri Ram desired to consecrate and offer worship to Shiva.

Arrangements were soon completed, except finding a suitable priest to guide the function. Sri Ram thought for a while and then decided on the best person available nearby - Ravana the king of Sri Lanka. Without hesitation he bade Hanuman to fly to Ravana’s palace and request him to conduct the pooja.

There was considerable shock and dismay among the assembly; to invite an enemy to conduct a pooja, specially meant to conquer and destroy him! Will Ravana accept such a preposterous invitation?

But Hanuman as a loyal soldier implicitly obeyed the royal command and flew to Sri Lanka to convey the message to Ravana. Men and women around him were also deeply shocked, surprised and mystified at this strange invitation from the prince of Ayodhya.

Ravana, true to his stature as a great pundit in Vedic literature, true to the tradition that as a Brahman, he should never decline an invitation to organize Divine worship, and true to his intense devotion to Lord Shiva accepted the invitation.

He came with Hanuman to Sri Ram’s place, much to the consternation of everyone. Soon the king of Sri Lanka made an inspection of all arrangements, and turning to Sri Rama, said,

"O prince of Ayodhya, though you have made very satisfactory arrangements, you are not qualified to install the idol of Lord Shiva in the absence of your wife. Our edicts declare that no person, however high, can perform such ceremonies without his consort nearby".

The mood of the entire assembly now changed from confusion to curiosity - how would Sri Rama react?

The noble prince smiled and calmly replied,

"We have invited you for the flawless performance of the ceremony. You have pointed out a flaw in tune with your duty as a pundit; I thank you for it. I now invite you to provide a solution, which also forms part of your duty".

This exposition of Dharmic postures and privileges between the greatest of kings and the noblest of men , was becoming even a treat for the Gods!

The king of Sri Lanka was not only a great ruler but also a great scholar. The scholar in him rose to the occasion now and Ravana said,

"O Rama, I can and shall provide a solution, since I do not wish to bear the blame for non-performance of Divine worship, but on one condition. I shall arrange to bring Sita here for the pooja but you should permit her to return to my place after the function".

All around, were astounded and speechless at the clash of wit and fantasy of words between the two great men and waited with bated breath for Sri Rama’s rejoinder. The noblest of men, simply and cheerfully accepted the offer, and the ceremony was completed in all solemnity. As per Indian customs and traditions, after viewing the couple, Ravana said “Let victory be yours!” though he knew well, those words meant his own destruction. Here was human values surpassing all constraints of Self.

Only one more formality remained, that of honoring the priest. Sri Rama invited Ravana himself to suggest the fees for the function. It was at this moment that the greatest and the most crucial episode of Ramayana unfolded before an unbelieving audience.

Ravana, the king would not take any fees, not even from Sri Rama, as he was always at the giving, and not the receiving end of fees or favors. But again the vedic pundit in him came to the fore.

He said,

"Sri Rama, knowing you very well, the only fees I solicit is that you stand by me when my life departs".

And thus it came to pass, that when Ravana lay in his last moments Sri Rama was near him. It only reveals that ultimate comfort for everyone high or low is to have Divinity nearby at the moment of death.

Some interesting facts and observations about "Playing cards"::

Did you know that the Traditional Deck of the Playing Cards are a veritable and most ingenious form of a Calendar?

There are 52 weeks in the year and so are 52 Playing Cards in a Deck.

 

There are 13 weeks in each Season and thus there are 13 cards in each suit. 

There are 4 Seasons in a Year and 4 Suits in the Deck. 

There are 12 Months in a Year so there are 12 Court Cards (Those with faces namely Jackdo Queens with The King in each suit) 

The Red Cards represent the Day, while the Black Cards represent the Night.

If you let 

Jacks = 11,  Queens = 12, and the Kings = 13, then add up all the sums of 1 + 2 + 3 + …to 13 = 91. Multiply this by 4, for the 4 Suits, therefore 91 x 4 = 364, Add 1 that is the Joker and you will arrive at the number 365 being the Days in a Year? 

Is that a mere coincidence or a greater intelligence ?

Of interest is the sum of the letters in all the names of the cards; eg : 

add up the letters in "one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, Jack, Queen, King" = 52 !

The Spades indicate ploughing/ working.

The Hearts indicates Love thy crops. 

The Clubs indicates flourishing and growth. 

The Diamonds indicate reaping the Wealth.

Also, in some card games 2 Jokers are used.Indicating the Leap year.

There is a deeper Philosophy than just a merely a Game of Playing Cards.

The Mathematical perfection is mind blowing.

A father left 17 ducks as asset for his Three Sons.

When the Father passed away, his sons opened up the will.

The Will of the Father stated that the Eldest son should get Half of 17 ducks,

The Middle Son should be given 1/3rd of 17 ducks,

Youngest Son should be given 1/9th of the 17 ducks

As it is not possible to divide 17 into half or 17 by 3 or 17 by 9, the sons started to fight with each other.

So, they decided to go to a wise man who lives in a cave.

The wise man listened patiently about the Will. The wise man, after giving this thought, brought one duck of his own & added the same to 17. That increased the total to 18 ducks.

Now, he started reading the deceased father’s will.

Half of 18 = 9.

So he gave 9 ducks

to the eldest son.

1/3rd of 18 = 6.

So he gave 6 ducks

to the middle son.

1/9th of 18 = 2.

So he gave 2 ducks

to the youngest son.

Now add this up:

9 + 6 + 2 = 17 &

This leaves 1 duck

which the wise man took back.

MORAL: The attitude of negotiation & problem solving is to find the 18th duck i.e. the common ground. Once a person is able to find the common ground, the issue is resolved. It is difficult at times.

However, to reach a solution, the first step is to believe that there is a solution. If we think that there is no solution, we won’t be able to reach any!

Simple solution

Some years ago, there was a Mensa convention at IIT Mumbai 

Mensa, is an

 international organization for people who have an IQ of 150 or higher. 

Several of the Mensa members went out for lunch at a local cafe opposite IIT Main Gate... 

When they sat down, one of them discovered that their salt shaker contained pepper, and their pepper shaker was full of salt. 

How could they swap the contents of the two bottles without spilling any, and using only the implements at hand? 

Clearly -- this was a job for Mensa minds. 

The group debated the problem and presented ideas and finally, came up with a brilliant solution involving a napkin, a straw, and an empty saucer after 60 minutes of loud arguments.... 

Everything from algorithms to surface tension to granularity was hotly debated... 

They then called the waitress over, ready to dazzle her with their solution. 

"Ma'am," they said, "we couldn't help but notice that the pepper shaker contains salt and the salt shaker contains pepper..." 

But before they could finish, the waitress interrupted & said... 

"Oh -- sorry about that." 

She leaned over the table, she plucked out the sticker SALT label from the pepper bottle and stuck it on the salt bottle and likewise removed the PEPPER label sticker from salt and pasted it on the pepper. 

There was dead silence at the  Mensa table. 

For most of the problems in our lives there are simple solutions, but it is our “Brilliant” minds that complicate every simple solution. ...Change the stickers and enjoy life!!!

Wife - Lets go for a dinner tonight.

Husband (HR Manager) - Ok.

Husband - Should we go to a cheaper restaurant ? 

Wife - No. Let's go to Royal Palace hotel.

Husband - (silence for a minute) - Ok, See you at 7.O 'Clock.

On the way, around 6.30 pm...

Husband - Once upon a time, I had pani puri competition with my sister and she ate 30 pani-puris and defeated me.

Wife - What's so difficult in it?

Husband - Defeating me in Pani-puri eating competition is so difficult.

Wife - I can easily beat you.

Husband - Please leave it. It's not your cup of tea.

Wife - Let us have that competition right now.

Husband - So you want to see yourself defeated?

Wife - Let's see.

They both stop at a Pani-puri stall and start eating...

After about 30 Pani-puris the husband gave up. 

The wife was also full, but to defeat her husband, she ate one more and shouted, "You lose."

The bill was Rs 50/- and wife was back home and happy as she won the bet.

Moral of the Story...

Main aim of a HR Manager is to satisfy employee with minimum investments. Winning attitude with less investment, ensuring strong Return On Investment!

When Sri Sri ravishankar was addressing the European Parliament.  

A member asked a question that Yoga is a Hindu tradition & mostly people like him (the member of parliament) being Christians find it difficult to accept n adapt to it as it's contrary to their beliefs. 

Simple n brilliant reply by Sri Sri Ravishankar. 

Firstly Hinduism is a way of living, not a religion.  

    By eating Chinese food one doesn't become a Chinese or by listening to Beethoven one doesn't become a German. 

   So if we can appreciate cuisines, music etc. from other countries then why shouldn't accept wisdom & techniques for a stress free living like Yoga which is from India.

A Guru takes away things you have and do not require.

4. A teacher requires obedience and discipline from the pupil.

A Guru requires trust and humility from the pupil.

5. A teacher clothes you and prepares you for the outer journey.

A Guru strips you naked and prepares you for the inner journey.
